And The Winner Is...

Pete Mitchell polled you, the Xfm massive, as to which is the greatest album to come from the hallowed city of Manchester. Want to know who won?

Over the last couple of weeks Pete Mitchell has been trying to determine which is the greatest Manchester album of all time. We asked you what you thought. Do you still dance to Joy Division, or were Buzzcocks bigger in your house? Did you hate it when James became successful, or do you put your money on 'The Queen Is Dead'? And which Oasis album is best?

Well, the votes are in and they're all counted. And here's the Top 10 as voted by YOU...

1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
2. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
3. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
4. The Verve - Urban Hymns
5. 808 State - Ninety
6. Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory
7. Oasis - Definitely Maybe
8. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
9. Doves - Lost Souls
10. James - Gold Mother

As for the "wild cards", those albums that didn't get a look in, there were a few honourable mentions.

The Chameleons - 'Script Of The Bridge'
"It was the best debut album of all time from the most under-rated band of their generation," says Steve Clare. "That is all."

The Courteeners - 'St Jude'
"It is totally underrated or just disliked, but it needs to be recognized a little more," says Robin Cunningham. "For me it seems to sum the past great Mancunian bands, as I wasn't around then."

The Stockholm Monsters - 'Alma Mater'
"Probably one of the least played groups and one of the best," says Jason Plant. "So why not play one of the fine tunes they did? A lot of their tunes are good beer spillers as well."

New Fast Automatic Daffodils - 'Body Exit Mind'
"Not only for Andy Spearpoint's amazingly individual vocal style (Manchester bands are amazing for their array of individuality)," says Simon Green. "But also because 'It's Not What You Know' is one of the finest songs ever recorded."

And finally, a mention for "Only Forever" by Puressence. But only because the massed ranks of the Puressence message board descended on the site and voted it in.

What do you think? A good call? Or was Puressence robbed? Discuss! Leave a comment here!

  1. How totally unexpected !!! Only came across the results today by accident as I completely forgot about it as when it was voting time I could have written the results before any vote was cast !!! Only Forever is one of the finest albums to come out of Manchester - shame on you XFM for ignoring this - but carry on as you are playing your 'this is good as it's a Manchester band and people in London like it' garbage - one day you'll be found out !!!

  2. Puressence should be mentioned on merit. Whether prompted to by a message board or not, people were still telling the truth.

Only Forever is one of THE best albums to come out of Manchester.

  3. It's insulting to say that Puressence was only mentioned because of fan message boards urging them to do so. Puressence are one of the finest bands ever to come out of the Uk nevermind Manchester, and their 2nd album "Only Forever" is the jewel in their crown. Local Manchester radio should be saluting their work and shouting their name from the rooftops, not dissing the fans that follow them.. Shame on you!!!!

  4. What do you mean by 'the massed ranks of the Puressence Message board descended on the site' If it wasnt for them they wouldnt even have got a mention - a pathetic mention it was at that! Puressence are a brilliant Manchester band and dont get enough credit or airplay on your so called 'We love Manchester Bands radio station' Very disappointed we dont hear more Puressence on XFM. Given the airplay they could be as big s the Courteeners or Doves - You already have dissed them by saying they only got a mention because of such and such. Give them a chance and stop trying to be so cool and giving other shit bands a chance just beacause they are flavour of the week by some drugged up music critic!

  5. Can't believe there's no New Order in the top 10 - either 'Power, Corruption, Lies' or 'Technique' are surely better than anything by The Verve or 808 state???

  6. Ericka, I wasn't expecting Puressence to win. However i was expecting them to get a mention.

    And they have.

Next time their over there in Greece, am gonna go for that cheap flight.

I have heard some o f their new stuff and it sounds great. Our Numbers Oracle, is the one to keep your ears open for.

Just hope they get a chance on XFM, Manchester may well wake up and take notice.

  8. Only a few months ago Puressence were in greece Supportin Depeche Mode. Unfortunatley Depeche Mode had to pull out due to Dave becomin ill. Puressence ended up playin to a crowd of thousands and they held their own to all accounts.

Then a few weeks later they be playin to a couple of hundered in a small venue in Preston.

What ever the crowd they appear to enjoy what their doin because they like it that way.

XFM get em on your show NOW! Let Manchester know what their Missin.

No put it another way, the WHOLE WORLD!

Them there Greeks have good taste, an their women aint to bad either.

  9. I'm a greek fan of Puressence and I'm happy to see that they were mentioned above, between some historical and famous bands such as The Stone Roses, The Chameleons etc on this poll.
Even though they are massive in Greece, they are one of the most underrated bands of the UK. This is quite unfair. Their tunes are loveable!
Give a chance to their new material which will be out soon.
    Cheers from Athens.

  10. It was good to hear puressence last week on your show should play some more. The band have been around some time and still play to good crowds. They have some new stuff comin our way soon and ave heard some of it. I would say its gonna be some their best work to date.

Their at the Apollo this November and as like all their gigs this will be somethin to shout about. The band still have a strong following of fans. I think their let down is not in the band but in critics tryin to compare them to other bands when in their own right to compare Puressence they are comparable to themselves. They work hard at what they do and try not to fall into copying other styles or try to be something they are not. What they are, are a credit to Manchester. My top tracks are Sharpen up your knives and This Feeling.

There you go Phil AKA Deadsmart
