The Smiths - 'The Queen Is Dead'

Morrissey gets all royalist and romantic... or does he?

Morrissey and Marr's third full length outing was one of the most keenly-awaited albums of the 1980s, following up the colossal 'Meat Is Murder'. Record label wrangling delayed the LP, but it was worth the wait. Opening with the ferocious title track, the album ran the full gamut of Morrissey's concerns, from loneliness, religion, the Royal Family, cemetaries and possibly the oddest romantic sentiment ever on 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'. Johnny Marr was at the peak of his powers by adding delicate music to comical lyrics such as 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' and 'The Queen' features two of the band's greates 45s - 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' and 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'.
Top tune: 'Bigmouth Strikes Again'
