Keith Moon Denied A Blue Plaque

Who drummer Keith Moon’s Blue Plaque is now in doubt. Originally, the iconic sticksman was due one of London’s famous Blue Plaques outside the original site of the Marquee venue in Soho. The Who’s singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend were lined up to unveil the tribute, but that’s recently been scotched by the organisation that awards them.

Speaking on Radio 4, Sir Christopher Frayling, who sits on the Blue Plaque committee, has said,

"You have to be dead in order to get a blue plaque for some time - 20 years - and you have to have a high recognition factor," he said.

Clearly taking time out from resting his head in the sand, Frayling went on to intimate that Genesis drummer, and M.O.R. king Phil Collins was more worthy of the award.

"Is [Moon] a great drummer? Well you'd have to wait until Ringo Starr is dead and Collins is dead and all these other great rock drummers until you can make that kind of decision.

“We decided that bad behaviour and over-dosing on various substances wasn't a sufficient qualification to get a Blue Plaque."

Since Fralying’s misguided comments, Westminster City Council and the Heritage Foundation – who clearly have a stronger grip on popular culture - have stepped in to give Moon the award instead.

2. Keith Moon was the most unique, natural and influential drummer of the whole rock era. Before he came along the drums where ridiculously simple and monotonous, and Ringo was never going to change that. As well as that he was one of the most flamboyant and extrovert personalities of post-war culture. He is an icon for millions of people all over the planet. Frayling is ignorant and clearly prejudiced. How else can he justify denying Moonies cultural significance?
