Xfm's Review Of 2008 - Part 2

The Xfm news from April to June of 2008. Crawling 'round Camden, Great Escaping to Brighton and having an All Day Breakfast...
APRIL
Xfm Crawled Around Camden
The yearly festival of debauchery, rock'n'roll and sharp haircuts that is Camden Crawl took place in the North London hotspot over a liver-punishing weekend in April. Your very own Xfm was down at Koko, hosting a show that saw The Fratellis, One Night Only, Ida Maria, Does It Offend You Yeah? and more all playing for us.

The Last Shadow Puppets - An Indie Super Group!
Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys... Miles Kane of The Rascals... and a Mercury Music Prize-nominated album of cinematic glory. 2008 was the Year Of The Collaboration and this clash of indie titans gained the most critical plaudits. The pair came in to see John Kennedy and told him that James Bond composer John Barry and Axl Rose had both influenced the album...

Morrissey Racism Hoo-Ha
Moz latest: Word magazine had to apologise to the singer in April for an article that "could have been construed to suggest that Mr Morrissey was a racist", according to the court statement. However, the former Smith was also pursuing an action against the NME pending, for similar reasons. "Ultimately, my client would rather spend his time in concert than in Court," said his brief. As long as his throat doesn't give out, of course.

MAY
The Ting Tings Hit Number One
The Salford duo of Katie White and Jules di Martino hit the top spot in the singles chart with one of the year's hottest tracks, 'That's Not My Name'. And from there it was a meteoric rise to a Number One album with 'We Started Nothing' and a host of incredible festival Performances.

Xfm Escaped To The Great Escape
Summer was but around the corner, so Xfm decamped to Brighton for a gig-packed weekend of ligging and schmoozing. The Young Knives, Vampire Weekend, Cage The Elephant, The Whip, Late Of The Pier and - as they say - many more, did their thing among beach bars and candy floos stalls.

Emo Fights Back!
The Daily Mail caused a minor ruckus when they began a campaign to stamp out Emo. Having explained to Middle England just what this "Emo" thing was, they claimed that this gloomy music was causing kids to off themselves, following the suicide of emo fan Hannah Bond. Emo fans marched on the Daily Mail offices to call on journalists to grow up and get over it.

JUNE

The Xfm All Day Breakfast!
In what can only be described as a moment of madness, Xfm decided to keep the Breakfast Show running for a whole 24 hours on June 21. Alex Zane was at the helm in London (wearing a different fancy dress outfit each hour), while Mike McClean took over the airwaves in Manchester. And, if that wasn't enough, we held 24 hours-worth of gigs all over the capital. Kicking off with One Night Only at the Barfly at 6am, and taking in Noah And The Whale, Mystery Jets, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Paul Weller, Feeder, Guillemots, Primal Scream and winding up with The Young Knives at the 100 Club at 3am the next morning, it was both glorious and utter carnage.

Glastonbury In "Not Pissing Down All Weekend" Shocker
Having successfully avoided the torrential horror of 2005 and 2007 (leaving Bestival to deal with that one, unfortunately), Glasto '08 was unanimously named a "good one". Kings Of Leon rocked, Jay-Z took the piss out of Noel Gallagher and The Verve were majestic. Meanwhile, Franz Ferdinand played a secret set and Amy Winehouse punched a punter. Not a vintage year, but definitely one that put Glastonbury back on the map.

GN'R Album Leaked
Oh dear, oh dear. Somebody just couldn't wait... the long-delayed Guns N'Roses album 'Chinese Democracy' got a brief preview when blogger Kevin Coghill posted nine tracks online. They were swiftly removed and Coghill was subsquently pleaded guilty of copyright infringement.
