The Rough Trade Documentary
Rough Trade began life as a record shop in 1976 in Notting Hill before evolving into one of the best known and loved indie record label of a generation.
Inspired by punk and its DIY ethos, the first record to emerge on the Rough Trade Label was Stiff Little Fingers’ ‘Inflamable Material’ in 1979.
After four lads from Salford got in touch with label boss Geoff Travis, Rough Trade and The Smiths went on to shape indie music for years to come.
Rough times befell Rough Trade in the early 90s when the company went bankrupt in 1991. Its indy heart kept beating nevertheless, and went on to release genre defining records by The Strokes and The Libertines at the turn of the new millennium.
