“Pennie Would Have Split The Automatic”
Singer Rob Hawkins says there’s ‘no regrets’ about former keyboardist’s departure. "No worries" in following up Monster, either.
Automatic singer Rob Hawkins, in an interview with Xfm, has said that keyboardist Pennie’s departure was “the right move”. He also denied the band had ever considered splitting as a result of the rift.
“It was never going to spell the end of the band. Him staying would have spelt the end of it”, said the singer. “He didn’t want to be in the band anymore and what he did on the first album, the screaming thing, there’s only so far you can take that, really. We couldn’t have progressed… There’s no regrets on either side as far as I know”.
Rob also denied there was pressure to follow up the band’s smash hit, 'Monster'.
“We weren’t worried at all... I see it as a blessing really. We wrote this song and it’s done, really, really well. You can’t really moan about that. The second album’s not even out yet. It’s not like we’ve had 5 albums and that’s the only song we’re known for. That was the hit off one album. You can’t complain really”.
