Neil Young Closes Inaugural Hop Farm Festival

Veteran rocker Neil Young brought the inaugural Hop Farm Festival in Kent to a close last night with a set that covered all facets of his varied career. Also on the bill were a rejuvinated Primal Scream who previewed material from new album, 'Beautiful Future'.

Designed a sponsorship-free alternative to festivals reliant on heavy branding and exclusive areas, the first Hop Farm Festival in Kent was slightly marred by heavy showers, huge toilet queues and traffic chaos afterwards as 30,000 fans attempted to leave the site at around midnight.

Yet depsite these setbacks, fans were treated to stunning sets from a number of the day's performers. With the rain stopping in time for My Morning Jacket's teatime set, the Kentucky band treated the audience with a tight set characterised by some amazing fretwork from frontman Jim James.

Supergrass proved themselves to be something of a national treasure with a career spanning-set that included highlights 'Caught By The Fuzz' and 'Richard III'.

An unusually polite Bobby Gillespie led Primal Scream through a barnstorming performance that saw the band previewing material from their new album, 'Beautiful Future', as well as old favourites 'Rocks', 'Swastika Eyes' and 'Movin' On Up'.

Neil Young used his two hour slot to deliver a set that displayed his versatility. Opening with a 15-minute rendition of 'Love And Only Love', Young's virtuosity as a guitarist was confirmed during epic readings of 'Fuckin' Up', 'Words' and 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'. Fans of Youngs more mellow moments were treated to the classics, 'Heart Of Gold', 'Old Man' and 'Oh Lonesome Me'. There was also a surprise version of The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life' which brought the gig to a close.

It is understood that the festival will return next year.
